$15 GE smart bulb evaluation problem frequently

Among all smart home devices, connected light bulbs are probably the most promising product category to enter the mainstream market. For consumers who are interested in trying this technology, there are already plenty of choices in the current market. Among these products, GE's Link Connected Light Bulb is an attractive option, in part because of its ultra-low price of $14.97 (approximately RMB 94). In actual use, what is the performance of this connected light bulb?

The price and design of GE Link is priced at $14.97 (approximately RMB 94), the same as the CREE networked LED bulb. Before the advent of GE Link, the cheapest connected light bulb on the market was Philips' Hue Lux, but its price was still much higher than the former (99.95 US dollars, about 626 yuan).

Although it is quite expensive to buy a light bulb for $15, Link has a lifespan of 25,000 hours, which is much higher than ordinary bulbs. In addition to the 60W base model, GE also offers 65W and 90W models, the price is 19.97/24.97 US dollars (about RMB 125/156 yuan). GE Link is slightly stronger than Cree in terms of product abundance.

Although the light bulb is always covered by the lampshade, the design of the Link itself is really great and looks like a filament light bulb from the future. The lower half of the tapered design is a shiny white plastic with a light green color at the bottom. The top of the bulb is made of a transparent plastic material, which also exposes its internal structure, giving it an industrial feel.

But after lighting the bulb, the Link transparent design also caused problems. Compared to Cree's translucent processing, Link performs poorly on light scattering, and direct viewing can be a bit dazzling. But considering that the bulbs are usually installed in the lampshade, there is not much difference between the performance of the two bulbs at work.

Link has a maximum brightness of 800 lumens and a maximum power consumption of 12W, which is 80% smaller than conventional bulbs. Although the weight of 172 grams is not light, it is not a problem after installation. Among the similar products, Link's fever is the biggest. After 10 minutes of opening, the bottom of the touch is already very hot.

Connections and settings

Although this bulb can unpacking ready to use, but if you want to use mobile devices for control, you also need a "bridge." GE has a Link Hub that costs $30 (about RMB 188), but it doesn't seem to be available yet. The Wink Hub, which costs $50 (about RMB 313), is another, more accessible control center, although it is a third-party solution. Technically, Link is compatible with any hub that supports the ZigBee protocol, even without official support. During the test, the cooperation between Link and Wink Hub was very smooth.

After installing Wink Hub at home and installing the companion app on your mobile device, the light bulb setup is very simple. In the application, you just need to click on "Add a product > Light bulb" and select the Link light bulb from the pop-up list. The app will then present you with all the installation steps, but they are all very simple. You just have to wait for the control hub to be ready, screw on the bulb, and then light it up.

Link cannot be installed in a three-way light, and it is not good with the dimmer. It will always flash when it is not at the highest brightness.

radio network controller controls the application above, Link, and other networking lamp no different. First, you need to make sure the power switch is on so that you can use the app to control the light on and off. Compared to other home automation hubs on the market, Wink Hub's interface is more intuitive, and the cartoon design is also very attractive. When the light bulb icon is clicked, the control menu that pops up the app allows you to control each light bulb individually or in batch control.

Click on the icon of a single light bulb to control its switch and drag it laterally to control the brightness. If you want more precise control, long press on the icon will bring up an extra menu with a slider that controls the brightness. You can check the time when the light bulb is turned on or off in the recording or preset it.

Wink Hub does not currently support IFTTT, but it has a similar feature called Robots that allows you to set a series of trigger conditions for networked devices. For example, if you have a Quirky Aros air conditioner (and get used to when you go to bed), you can set the bulb to turn off when the air conditioner is turned on.

Summary

Overall, GE Link is a networking and Cree bulb matched products. The former's design is even better, although Cree's light is softer at work. At the price of 14.97 US dollars (about 94 yuan), it is not wrong to choose which one.
