Tesla’s series of autopilot car accident controversies last year seems to have come to an end.
The cause of the incident was that in May of last year, a Florida Tesla Model S owner crashed into autonomous driving mode. This car is Tesla's current masterpiece. It was certified by the US Environmental Protection Agency at the time of listing and has become the world's most powerful pure electric vehicle with 426 kilometers of battery life. Therefore, this incident has attracted a lot of attention.
As early as January, a car owner in Tesla China also drove the Model S, which died when the auto-driving mode started, but Tesla China did not explain it until the car accident in May. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) then launched an investigation into Tesla.
Today, Tesla and founder Elon Musk seem to have won.
In NHTSA's newly released report, the official pointed out that "Autopilot", also known as Tesla's automatic driving system, could not handle all situations. This is the same for autopilot systems in other depots. In fact, Tesla's Autopilot is between 2 and 3 in the official US definition, meaning that driving at least at any time can take over the vehicle. After the incident, Tesla also quietly revised the official website to change "automatic driving" to "automatic assisted driving."
According to the NHTSA survey, the owner of the Tesla, who was driving on the Florida Freeway, encountered a large trailer on the road across the road and was in Autopilot mode. Although the Autopilot has the ability to detect the distance from the preceding car and slow down and stop, if the front car is in this situation across the road, it will fail, so the Model S will eventually crash.
Although Tesla pointed out at the time of the incident that Model S could not judge the obstacle ahead because of the strong daylight, the NHTSA investigation attributed the responsibility to the owner who relied too much on Autopilot and did not concentrate on seeing the road. Two minutes before the incident, he set the cruising speed to 119 kilometers per hour.
In contrast, Autopilot is fully functional in its original design, or strictly speaking, NHTSA has not found any evidence of Autopilot failure or flaws. The NHTSA subsequently called for all self-driving systems on the market to be fully driven. Tesla, one of the victims, also said that they have been advocating that when driving Autopilot, driving must continue to put their hands on the steering wheel.
In fact, the accident may actually have a significant impact on the autonomous driving industry, because NHTSA has the power to ask Tesla to recall the Model S and even prohibit the assembly of Autopilot in the car. Its investigation thus shows, to some extent, how the official US supervisory unit will look at autonomous driving.
