Flexible display manufacturers are stepping up their lead. During the year, mobile phone manufacturers including Samsung, Vivo, and Xiaomi all released smart phones using flexible AMOLED screens, and other manufacturers are also planning to develop smart phones that can be folded (or bendable, hyperbolic). However, at present, in the field of small and medium-sized flexible displays, only Samsung has achieved mass production.

"Samsung is the undisputed leader of small and medium-sized flexible OLEDs in the world. In the context of the continued rise of the downstream market, Samsung is accelerating its entry into the OLED market." According to IHS Markit data, as more and more manufacturers adopt flexible display technology in product design, it is expected that the sales of flexible display will reach 139 million in 2017, an increase of 135% compared with 2016. Among them, smartphone products are the main force of application. According to the latest IHS Markit data, smartphones accounted for 76% of the total flexible display supply in 2016, and the rest were occupied by smart watches for other applications (including tablets, near-eye virtual reality devices, car monitors and OLED TVs). The supply will not change significantly until 2023.

In the smart phone products, AMOLED is extremely popular. It is understood that OLED is currently divided into two routes of PMOLED and AMOLED, of which AMOLED is called "Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode". Compared with traditional LCD panels, AMOLED breaks through the inflexible limitations, with faster response, higher contrast, and wider viewing angle. According to the IHS Markit smartphone display market tracking report, the total shipment of AMOLED displays reached a record 101 million in the third quarter of 2016. The penetration rate of AMOLED displays in China's smartphone brands is expected to be 8% from 2015. It rose to 13.6% in 2016.

In fact, the current industry's expected demand for AMOLED has far exceeded its own supply. "In the field of smart phones, more and more smartphone manufacturers choose AMOLED screens. The level of technology is in line with Samsung

However, the domestic mass production of flexible displays is still slightly lower than the international level. According to IHS Markit data, Samsung's display dominated the market with a shipment of 99.7 million units in the 101 million pieces of AMOLED display shipments in the third quarter of 2016.

According to Han Yun, in 2015, Samsung's new AMOLED panel line began production in April. Since then, Samsung has begun to adopt a comprehensive external supply of AMOLED panels. At present, Samsung has used this technology to achieve success in small and medium-sized OLED panels, and is in a monopoly position on the global OLED mobile phone screen.

BOE is an early entry point for flexible displays in China. It is understood that BOE's first mass-produced AMOLED line is the first 4K 5.5 generation line capacity of Erdos B6. It entered the mass production stage in the fourth quarter of 2015, and is the second AMOLED production line that was put into production after the domestic company. body. The 6th generation AMOLED production line of BOE Mianyang has a planned production capacity of 48,000 glass substrates per month. It is expected to achieve mass production in 2019.

"From the perspective of capacity, BOE will achieve a strategic leap in flexible AMOLED capacity investment. The current three AMOLED production lines will help to consolidate the early competitive advantages with domestic peers and even Japanese manufacturers." Han Yun said.

At the same time, Li Shengfa also pointed out that Samsung's "strong" is reflected in the fact that it has a full industrial chain and a very comprehensive supply network. From product design to product application, BOE has a domestic industrial chain (industrial chain). It is relatively immature; in terms of patents, although BOE is far ahead in the domestic market, the gap is still obvious compared with Samsung. In addition, related materials and equipment are dependent on imports, and talents and technology are still weak.
