Mercedes-Benz has introduced its first-ever luxury pickup truck, the X-Class, marking a bold step into the high-end pickup market. This new model is built on the same platform as the Nissan Navara and Renault Alaskan, and will be manufactured at Nissan's Barcelo plant in Argentina and Renault's factory in Córdoba, Argentina. The X-Class is set to compete directly with vehicles like the Volkswagen Amarok, offering a range of powerful engine options.
The production version of the X-Class was officially announced in late 2016, and it’s now making its way to markets around the world—except for the United States. The vehicle is expected to launch this year, with the first official release scheduled for the 18th. Fans have been eagerly waiting for this moment, as the X-Class promises to deliver both style and performance.
In terms of powertrain, the X 200 features a four-cylinder petrol engine producing 166 horsepower and 238 Nm of torque. The X 220 d and X 250 d models come with a four-cylinder diesel engine, offering 163 hp and 190 hp respectively, with peak torque reaching up to 450 Nm. These engines are paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic transmission (with the latter available only on the X 250 d). Additionally, the X 220 d and X 250 d can be equipped with a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, while non-4MATIC models are rear-wheel drive.
The X-Class is designed to handle various terrains, from urban streets to off-road conditions. It boasts a 20.4-degree approach angle, which outperforms competitors like the Chevrolet Colorado and Honda Ridgeline. With a wheelbase of 124 inches, a length of 210 inches, and a width of 75.6 inches, the X-Class offers a spacious and versatile interior. It can carry up to 2,297 lbs (1,042 kg) and has a ground clearance of 7.95 inches (202 mm), making it highly capable in challenging environments.
Priced at 37,294 euros in Germany (approximately RMB 290,000), the X-Class represents a premium option in the pickup segment. It comes with 17-, 18-, or 19-inch wheels depending on the trim level, adding to its visual appeal. While it's not currently available in China, the growing interest in pickups among Chinese consumers may one day change that.
Despite its practicality and beauty, the X-Class is not sold in China, leaving local enthusiasts to admire it from afar. However, with changing perceptions of pickups in the country, there's hope that future models might find their way to the Chinese market. For now, it remains a symbol of Mercedes-Benz's ambition to redefine what a luxury pickup can be.
