Potential applications of nano LEDs in biomedical devices

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on liquid-phase inorganic nanocrystals are expected to be used in biomedical diagnostics because of their low cost and chemical stability. However, due to the difficulty in achieving ultraviolet radiation, research has not made a major breakthrough.
Recently, the Sergio Brovelli research group of Los Alamos National Laboratory collaborated with the Alberto Paleari research team of the University of Milan, Italy to develop a glass-based inorganic LED embedded in semiconductor nanoparticles. In this device, tin dioxide nanoparticles are encapsulated in tin oxide and embedded in a glass material that illuminates in the ultraviolet spectrum and is integrated into the chip. The electrical response of the entire material can be controlled by adjusting the thickness of the nanoparticle shell.
This device combines the chemical and mechanical stability of glass with electrical and electroluminescent properties. Therefore, it can be used in harsh environments (such as immersion in physiological solutions or directly implanted in the human body) and is expected to be used in the manufacture of biomedical devices.
