Although this complex can be easily activated to a high-energy state, since it is distorted, it dissipates more energy than it emits in the form of light, and thus the luminous efficiency is far less than that of the ruthenium complex.
To solve this problem, the researchers changed the molecular environment in which copper is located, encapsulating copper ions in several organic ligands. This method has been successful in emitting green-emitting OLEDs, and the external electron efficiency of the modified copper complex is almost equivalent to that of the ruthenium complex.
