The Munich-based Wacker Chemie AG has developed a new package of adhesives for light-emitting diodes ( LEDs ) and optical components. Made from silicone elastomers with high transparency and high refractive index, the product can withstand high operating temperatures and intense light radiation without yellowing, making it ideal for LEDs with high luminous efficiency. In addition, the product can protect the LED chip from corrosive gases and greatly extend the life of the chip. This silicone encapsulant can be processed by industrial metrology processes such as dispensing.
Both LUMISIL 590 and LUMISIL 591 are highly cured, addition-cured silicone elastomers with a refractive index of 1.53 and are high refractive index (HRI) encapsulants. Such products are particularly suitable for the manufacture of LEDs with high luminous efficiency. High refractive index silicones can provide protection for the chip led, so that corrosive gases from mechanical impact and erosion. At the same time, since such a silicone has a high refractive index, optimum luminous efficiency can be obtained.
Conventional semiconductor chips for emitting light in LEDs also have a high refractive index, and therefore, in order for the light emitted from the LED chips to penetrate the package material to the utmost extent, the refractive indices of the chips and the encapsulant must be substantially equal. With a high refractive index of up to 1.53, LUMISIL 590 and LUMISIL 591 provide LEDs with extremely high luminous efficiency. In addition, for light in the visible spectrum (about 400–700 nm), the highly transparent silicone is almost completely transparent, and it does not yellow under extremely strong radiation conditions. Transmission tests using LUMISIL 590 have shown that more than 91% of visible light can penetrate a 1 mm thick encapsulant layer.
LUMISIL 590 and LUMISIL 591 effectively protect LED chips from the environment. Corrosive gases such as hydrogen sulfide can damage the LED chip and reduce its performance. Tests have shown that LED chips packaged with LUMISIL 590 and LUMISIL 591 are able to withstand such damage for longer periods of time and last longer.
These two new high-refractive-index silicones are easy to process, have heat resistance and are absolutely dry-free after curing, and have optimum flow characteristics and cross-linking properties. The viscosity of LUMISIL 590 and LUMISIL 591 are 2000mPa·s and 2500mPa·s, respectively, so the process is efficient and cost-effective. Both products are suitable for encapsulation of LED chips using a non-contact dispensing process. LUMISIL 590 and LUMISIL 591 form cured rubber products of varying hardness. Among them, LUMISIL 590 is relatively soft and has a hardness of Shore A65; while LUMISIL 591 is significantly harder and has a Shore D40 hardness.
