Michael Dzakovich, Celina Gómez and Cary Mitchell from the Department of Agriculture and Landscape Architecture at Purdue University in the United States released relevant research results at HortScience. They point out that LED lighting is gradually becoming an alternative to high-pressure sodium lamps. They pointed out: "Everyone is curious about the effects of phytochemicals and olfactory levels in high-value greenhouse crops that use LED lights as a light source. The researchers conducted three independent studies to investigate the effects of supplemental lighting quantity and quality on greenhouse-planted tomatoes. The plants are a control group that completely receives natural sunlight, natural sunlight plus HPS lamp-assisted illumination, and natural sunlight with LED plant growth lights. Scientists collected chroma, Brix, titratable acidity, electrical conductivity, and pH acidity to analyze plant response to illumination. The researchers said: "Contrary to our original hypothesis, fruit quality is completely unaffected by LED-assisted light sources."
The study also included inviting the test-teacher team to color, acidity, and sweetness the tomato, using a combination of measuring instruments. Tasting staff must also assess the color, aroma, feel, sweetness, acidity, aftertaste and overall feel of the tomato. “After receiving biochemical and actual tasting data, we can decide whether the data endorsed by physical chemistry is also reflected in consumers' perception of tomato quality.â€
The tasting group indicates that the data difference in materialization cannot be discerned by them by trial eating; in fact, the tasting group is completely unable to discern the difference between the tomato using different auxiliary illumination and the tomato without the auxiliary light source.
Studies have shown that the quality of greenhouse tomatoes is not affected by the acceptance of auxiliary lighting. The data obtained from the physical and chemical measurements show only very small differences between the different control groups, and the testers have confirmed that these differences are subtle and difficult to discern.
The researchers said the results of this study are positive for farmers who want to introduce greenhouse LED lighting. “The intensity and wavelength of the LED-assisted light source have no negative impact on the quality of the greenhouse tomato results, and it shows that the led light source is suitable as an alternative source for HPS lamps with overheating problems.â€
