This flaw, dubbed "HomeHack," enables unauthorized access to users' accounts, potentially turning these smart devices into surveillance tools. The Hom-Bot, priced at $805.10 on Amazon, comes equipped with a built-in camera designed for safety and navigation. However, this feature can be exploited if the system is compromised.
The vulnerability lies within the login process of the SmartThinQ application, allowing attackers to impersonate other users and gain full control over connected devices. This includes not only robot vacuums but also other IoT appliances such as refrigerators, microwaves, and dishwashers. Check Point warned users to be cautious about the security and privacy risks associated with LG's smart home ecosystem.
With over 1 million Hom-Bot units sold globally, the potential impact of this exploit is significant. LG has since acknowledged the issue and is working on a patch to address the security flaw. Users are advised to update their SmartThinQ app through Google Play or the Apple App Store, and also ensure that their home appliances are running the latest firmware via the same platform.
