Fuel efficiency is one of the most important factors for many households when considering a new car purchase. Today, we're going to take a closer look at some vehicles known for their high fuel consumption, offering you a reference if you're in the market for a new car. It's essential to be aware of these models, as they can lead to higher long-term costs—especially if you drive frequently or prioritize economy.

Haval H9

The Haval H9 is a massive vehicle, measuring over 5 meters in length, with a height of about 1.8 meters and a width of nearly 2 meters. This SUV far exceeds the traditional definition of a "medium-to-large SUV" from Great Wall Motor, placing it in the full-size SUV category. Compared to the Land Cruiser LC200, the H9 is only slightly shorter in length—just about 10 cm. In short, if you've seen the LC200, you can get a good sense of how big the H9 really is. It’s not just the largest SUV from Great Wall—it might be the biggest among all Chinese brand SUVs.

According to testing, the 2.0L turbocharged gasoline engine delivers 185 kW of power and 355 N·m of torque. Compared to the 6AT version, this engine offers an 18% increase in power and 8% in torque, with a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 10.8 seconds. Its fuel consumption is around 9.7 L/100 km. In contrast, the 2.0T engine in the Highlander has 162 kW and 350 N·m, making the Haval H9 a strong competitor in its class.

Despite being a top-tier model and the first mainstream Chinese brand to enter the 200,000 RMB range, the Haval H9 still faces criticism regarding its performance. Although it has excellent specifications, the reality is that the vehicle is somewhat flawed. From a fuel efficiency perspective, the H9 weighs over 2 tons but is powered by a relatively small engine, leading to an average consumption of around 15 L/100 km. This makes it quite expensive to operate, especially for daily use.

Mercedes-Benz G500

The Mercedes-Benz G500 has always been a standout in the off-road segment, featuring a classic boxy design and unmatched off-road capabilities. Inside, it takes a luxurious approach, offering comfort and style that make it feel like a premium off-road machine. With features such as advanced buttons and large displays, the G500 blends retro charm with modern technology, creating a unique driving experience.

The G500 is the dream car for many, combining brand prestige, powerful off-road performance, and a striking appearance. However, it comes with a price tag of over 1 million RMB. While the car may not be the most economical, it's definitely a “fuel guzzler.” On the highway, it can consume up to 20 liters per 100 km, which is significantly higher than typical family cars. Even in city driving, it's more like a seven- or eight-liter car in terms of fuel consumption. Despite this, the G500 still delivers solid performance, with a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 10.2 seconds despite its heavy build of nearly three tons.
