When Dongfeng Honda Jade made its official debut back in 2013, it came with a somewhat ambiguous model positioning and a unique six-seat layout, which set it apart as a niche offering. Unfortunately, its sales performance has been lukewarm. However, things seemed to take a promising turn at last year's Guangzhou Auto Show. Dongfeng Honda introduced an updated version of the Jade, complete with fresh design elements and a new powertrain. It remains to be seen whether this latest iteration of Jade can replicate the success of the iconic Civic.
The exterior redesign of the Jade is quite noticeable. The front grille has undergone significant changes, adopting a U-shaped dual-bar design that gives it a bolder look. Additionally, the headlights have been reshaped to resemble those of the new Accord, making the overall styling much more contemporary. The fog lamps have also been revamped; the traditional round design has been replaced by longer ones, while the surrounding frame has been restyled, adding a touch of sophistication compared to the previous model.
Turning to the rear, the updates are subtler but equally impactful. The new model features a curved chrome trim on the lower bumper, enhancing its elegance significantly. The exhaust system now sports a dual layout, with both outlets being chrome-plated for a premium finish.
Inside, the interior design of the new Jade remains largely unchanged from its predecessor. However, there are improvements in materials used and additional features aimed at appealing to younger buyers. For instance, the panoramic sunroof and shark-fin antenna add a modern touch. The seating arrangement continues to offer both a standard five-seat setup (2+3) and an innovative six-seat option (2+2+2).
Under the hood, the new Jade retains its 1.8-liter naturally aspirated engine but introduces a new 1.5-liter turbocharged variant (model L15BF) capable of producing up to 156 horsepower (115 kilowatts). This engine pairs seamlessly with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), ensuring smooth and efficient performance.
While the new Jade shows promise with these enhancements, only time will tell if it can achieve the same level of acclaim as the Civic. For now, it stands as a compelling choice for those seeking a versatile vehicle with distinct features and competitive pricing.
