Ballmer: Microsoft will usher in "epic era" with Win8

The online version of "The Seattle Times" recently published an interview record with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. In this interview, Ballmer talked about the new products and services that Microsoft is about to release. He said that with the Windows 8 operating system and other series of products, Microsoft will usher in its "epic era."

This fall, Microsoft will release a series of product upgrades, including Windows desktop operating system, Windows Phone mobile operating system, Office office suite, and Windows Server server software. In addition, Microsoft will also release its first branded computing device: the Surface tablet.

Ballmer said earlier that 2012 will be "the most epic year since Microsoft was founded." He was interviewed by the Seattle Times last week and described Microsoft's various products and services and related market strategies.

The following is a brief summary of Ballmer's interview with The Seattle Times:

Q: You have previously indicated that this year will be Microsoft's most epic year. In the history of Microsoft's development, is there another epic year that is also very epic, and its importance can be comparable to this year? Maybe it will make sense to release Windows 95 in 1995?

A: It should be said that the release of Windows 95 is the most epic event in the past 20 years. But the epic significance of Windows 8 should be more than Windows 95. It would be difficult to compare the events of Microsoft's creation and Microsoft's release of the first PC operating system that was welcomed by the global public. However, Windows 8 will indeed have scale effects.

Q: During this year, almost all of Microsoft’s current products and services will be upgraded. Are you intending to do this or is it purely coincidental?

A: I think it is purely coincidental. We do not issue an order that requires each of Microsoft's departments to release an upgraded version at the same time. We can only say: "There are some principle provisions here." We hope that after the release of Windows 8, the world will be completely changed ... and then the public will develop their own development plans around Windows 8 and related services.

Q: If the Windows 8 conference does not achieve the market effect you expected, what measures will you have at that time?

A: Windows 8 will certainly be welcomed by the market.

Q: You do not doubt this point?

A: How can I be skeptical? (laughs) There is nothing at all. Windows 8 is a great product...

The public often talks about such topics as: “Is the current PC market normal?” Next year PC sales will reach nearly 400 million units, which means that it is a very large market. Whether the sales volume is 455 million units or 395 million units, the market is very large, but Windows 8 will promote the growth of this sales volume. In addition, Windows 8 will also bring us a large number of mobile computing devices. I think it is difficult to distinguish between what is a tablet computer and what is a PC.

Q: Microsoft has succeeded in the business of Xbox game consoles and Kinect somatosensory controllers, but the strategy of Kin mobile phones and the acquisition of online advertising company aQuantive has not achieved the desired results. Can you talk about the success and failure of your strategy? What kind of experience and lessons did you get from it?

A: If we look at the successful model, we usually have the following factors: forward-thinking ideas, strong development teams, and executive teams... and then the amazing one—I don’t want to say the word “marketing.” Because this kind of thing is related to how you tell others about your product, not how much your voice is.

As far as the technology industry is concerned, loud noises cannot be successful. The most fundamental factor is whether your product can attract the public's attention, and then you can tell your own story more interesting.

I have seen some patterns related to this from the Skype business... We must also see if the Surface Tablet can also be successful, after all, the product is not yet on the market. However, Surface already has some success elements.

Q: Apple iPad has the largest market share in the tablet PC market. In my opinion, the short board of the product seems to be that its price is somewhat expensive. After you release the Surface tablet, will you compete with the iPad in terms of price, or will you compete with the iPad?

A: We have not yet announced the price of Surface. We think from a performance standpoint, Surface is a very competitive product... I think many people will definitely say that the price of the iPad is not so expensive... When people find lower-priced products on the market, people will feel that Their functions have also been discounted and they feel that these products are spurious.

If you always have someone, will he use a 7-inch tablet and will he use Amazon's Kindle tablet ($199) to do his homework? The answer you get is no. Because the user thinks the product is not good enough. Of course, this does not mean that you will not use these products to read e-books... If you look at the PC market, the best-selling products often sell for between $300 and $700 or $800, which is the intersection of product performance and market demand.

Q: As far as the technology industry is concerned, the competition between users and talent has become extremely fierce. Microsoft's direct competitors include Facebook, Google (microblogging) and so on. These companies are seen as more active in the outside world and have fewer rules. How does Microsoft compete with these companies?

A: I'm not sure that this statement is true. For the time being, I think Google is a very amazing company. I didn't say that they performed badly. They are very competitive in attracting talent, but they are no longer a small technology startup.

Microsoft is also a very big company. The company has a large scale, which helps us to develop a great product. Google is another large technology company. Only their scale is not small, and they have lost the sexual charm just after the initial public offering (IPO).

Relatively speaking, the scale of Facebook is not too big, and has just completed the IPO. However, Facebook’s share price is high and this situation is not good for its employees... But in any case, when people choose to work, they mainly look at whether they like the work and the corresponding work environment. Microsoft's work environment is very good, and we are very excited about it.

Q: Microsoft has previously established a "employee rankings" performance evaluation system. Is this formulation helpful to motivate employees' enthusiasm? Vanity Fair magazine wrote an article in August this year that the system artificially caused opposition among employees. Will this not help Microsoft to introduce new talent?

A: I think that for the top talents, they most want to work for companies that can best use their expertise... If you don’t tell employees about the company’s most basic position, everyone is crowded together and nothing happens, then the top talents are not. Give yourself a chance to take advantage of your expertise... As a result, we must create an evaluation system that enables people who are very capable of work to stand out, and points out which employees are outstanding but still have shortcomings compared to other employees. Through the evaluation system, employees can recognize where they are.

Q: In the past few months, Microsoft's share price has rebounded slightly. What do you think Wall Street analysts will think about your current management practices?

A: This question has always been difficult for me to answer. In short, there are three issues: First, how is the overall stock market? As the US stock market as a whole rose, our stock price should also rise. The second is that our revenue has risen. According to the classical theory of life, this means that our stock price should rise. The third is that we have entered the product upgrade cycle, and the outside world has been waiting for it. Investors have therefore responded to this, right?

However, only after Windows 8 is recognized by the public will it be possible to completely speculate on how Wall Street analysts will view Microsoft's market performance.

Q: Is it possible to say that Microsoft's share price is not performing well, usually because the outside world is not optimistic about Microsoft and related products?

A: Focusing on long-term considerations, the most important thing is two things: First, is your product outstanding? Only the product is excellent, users will pay for it. The second is whether you profit? If you are still in Facebook's early model, then it is at a different stage of development. Amazon does not make money, but the public is optimistic about its future development prospects. But focusing on long-term development, the reason why investors buy your stock price is mainly because you believe that you can develop a good product and find the right profit model.
