At 8 p.m., tech enthusiasts took notice of a newly discovered patent by MSPoweruser, revealing that Microsoft is reportedly developing a dedicated USB-C port for its existing Surface devices. This move could extend to both laptops and tablets in the near future. According to Microsoft's patent details, this new Surface interface will maintain compatibility with the standard USB-C interface.
The patent was developed by Jan Raken, a key figure in Microsoft's Surface design team, who described a novel approach that integrates the popular USB-C interface while retaining the magnetic connectivity feature of the Surface. However, based on the patent documentation, the current iteration seems limited to the USB 2.0 standard, which might pose challenges for devices already upgraded to USB 3.0 or even USB 3.1. Despite this, Microsoft has previously achieved USB 3.0 speeds with its Surface interface, indicating potential for future improvements.
In any case, many Surface users are eagerly anticipating Microsoft incorporating Thunderbolt into the upcoming USB-C setup. Currently, the magnetic connector on Microsoft’s Surface devices offers convenience, but Apple abandoned its MagSafe design on newer MacBook Pros. One of Microsoft’s key challenges moving forward will likely focus on enhancing data transfer speeds.
Panos Panay, the head of Microsoft’s Surface division, expressed earlier this year his serious consideration of the USB-C interface for Surface devices. He stated, “We don’t want to constantly alter our device configurations today, only to switch them tomorrow. These changes can eventually become obstacles for users. Whether it’s the Thunderbolt standard or others, having mismatched interfaces can lead to significant inconveniences. Imagine plugging your phone into a device one day and finding out it doesn’t charge—frustrating, right?â€
