Discrete graphics market: NVIDIA shares fell below 60% again

Following the overall graphics card market, the market regulator Jon Peddie Research (JPR) today announced the first quarter of 2011 discrete graphics market statistics report.

In the first three months of this year, global shipments of discrete graphics cards totaled 19.03 million units, an increase of only 1.0% from 18.84 million in the fourth quarter of last year. Although there were seasonal factors, they still fell compared to the same period of last year.

The most dynamic graphics card market is still high-end enthusiasts, although the scale is small (less than 9 million a year), but the market value is very high (average 300 US dollars per block), GPU parallel computing also brings more added value , And the main force of shipments still comes from performance level and mainstream level models. Workstation graphics cards shipped less than desktop fever graphics cards, but the average selling price is higher.

In terms of vendors, NVIDIA and AMD are competing with each other. The living space of other vendors such as VIA/S3 and Matrox is further squeezed. NVIDIA’s market share lost 2.7% compared to the end of last year, causing it to fall below 60% again after the third quarter of 2010, to 59.12%; AMD took the opportunity to gain 4.4% and its share rose to 40.46%.

Compared to the same period of last year, AMD's growth rate was as high as 16.8%, and NVIDIA lost 8.4%. At that time, NVIDIA’s share was still 64.5%.

JPR expects the total value of the discrete graphics card for the year to be approximately 19.8 billion U.S. dollars, which is 4.5% lower than last year. The reason is that the average selling price further falls, and the continuous increase in shipment volume will not help.
