John Lupton from the University of Utah is a member of the team. He said: "The existing OLEDs use a lamellar chain polymer, a chain of repeating molecular units that tend to emit polarized light. When this current is passed through the polymer, the electrons can only be generated by moving the chain up and down, resulting in polarized light, with nearly 80% of the light trapped in the organic layer. However, in the new wheel-like polymer, Electron oscillations can be generated in all directions, and the generated light is not polarized, reducing light loss.
The width of each wheel-shaped molecule is only 6 nanometers, but it is already quite large for the molecule. These wheel-shaped macromolecules can also "capture" to other molecules, enabling them to be effective biosensors. Lupton believes that they are also likely to be used in solar cells and switches.
The study was conducted by graduate students in physics at the University of Utah, the University of Bonn, Germany, and the University of Regensburg. In their latest report in the journal Nature Chemistry, the research team described how they constructed the wheel-shaped molecules and their single-molecule experiments. Lupton's research team believes that this research will likely increase the OLED luminous efficiency by a factor of two. Lupton said: "At present, the light loss rate is as high as 80%, and we will probably reduce it to 50%-60%."
