vCPE changes the future of the communications world

In March 2017, Japan Electric Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as NEC) and K-Opticom Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as K-Opticom) conducted an empirical experiment combining NFV*1 (network function virtualization) and 10G-EPON technology. This experiment verifies for the first time that the virtual client device vCPE can be applied to a 10 Gbps network connection. In the future, we will strive to provide more attractive "eo-light" 10Gbps services as soon as possible.

1. Background and purpose

Based on the increasing data traffic for home connectivity, K-Opticom expects that these home traffic will continue to increase rapidly in the future, and thus has been discussing the provision of 10 Gbps communication services for homes. However, when providing services, building a communication environment within a building is a problem that needs to be solved.

In this empirical experiment, the experiment environment including vCPE built by NEC was applied to the K-Opticom network virtualization platform to verify the assumption that vCPE can be applied to the 10Gbps Internet connection. vCPE provides traditional CPE functions and other upper-level functions from the data center (cloud) via the Internet, such as DHCP*4 and NAT*5, which can improve the home communications environment and simplify the home gateway. It will enable the following functions:

Realized world>

(1) Since the traditional CPE equipment in the home is virtualized on the network side of K-Opticom, a secure communication environment can be realized, and new services such as VoD, cloud storage, and parental control can be provided more conveniently and quickly.

(2) It can remotely monitor the communication status of electronic devices such as computers, smart phones and tablet PCs according to the needs of customers, which is conducive to improving the communication environment and quickly locating and resolving faults.

In the future, based on the results of this empirical experiment, field tests will be conducted around the fall of 2017. NEC and K-Opticom will continue to verify the real application of vCPE for 10Gbps Internet connectivity.

In addition, in the future, we will promote the implementation of services such as “storage services” and “remote diagnosis” using vCPE, and accelerate the realization of related services for the popularization of home IoT. We hope to seek cooperation with various types of IoT practitioners by opening this platform.

※1: Network Functions Virtualization (NFV): Virtualization of Network Functions

※2: Researched by K-Opticom and NEC on March 31, 2017

※3: Virtualized Customer Premises Equipment (vCPE): Virtual Client Device

*4: DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol): Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

※5: NAT (Network Address Translation): Network Address Translation

2. The world that vCPE can achieve

By setting up a home router through a virtualized network, customers can use the latest features without having to update themselves, thus providing a secure communication environment.

Published by VoD (vSTB)

Set up vSTB in the cloud and publish VoD through the network. Since the STB is no longer needed in the home, it is only necessary to combine TVs or smart phones that can correspond to DLNAs, and it is possible to watch videos on different devices at the same time.

Cloud Storage (vNAS)

By storing data in the cloud storage over the Internet, you can realize that any family member can access related data through a computer or smart phone according to their own needs.

Parental Controls

To prevent children from accessing unhealthy websites through computers or mobile phones, parents can easily filter URLs through cloud services.

remote diagnosis

According to the customer's requirements, it is possible to diagnose the home network environment from the operator's network. You can solve problems remotely even if you are not at home.
