Zhang Shouyi: When does machine intelligence surpass humans? Early

On July 15, 2017, the Netease Future Technology Summit took place in Beijing. This year's theme, "New Life," highlighted how the internet industry is bouncing back from a prolonged capital winter. Major companies are speeding up their transformations, unicorns are emerging one after another, and young entrepreneurs are regrouping and thriving. The internet is ushering in an entirely new future. This year's summit featured six forums: New Technology, New Future, New Content, New Entertainment, New Consumption, AI+ Finance, AI+ Travel, AI+ Life, and AR Future. We invited top scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, and cross-border stars from both within and outside China to discuss the future of artificial intelligence, consumer upgrades, and AR. At the event, Stanford University tenured professor and member of the American Academy of Sciences, Dr. Zhang Shouyi, delivered a keynote speech titled "The Three Pillars of Artificial Intelligence." Dr. Zhang emphasized that China holds significant potential in the field of artificial intelligence due to its vast data landscape, advanced mathematics, and science. Additionally, the abundance of talent and the ability to invest in materials science and mathematical algorithms present unique opportunities for China. Dr. Zhang pointed out that the current explosion of artificial intelligence can be attributed to three critical factors: the exponential growth of computing power described by Moore's Law, the massive data generated by the rapid expansion of the internet and the Internet of Things, and the swift advancement of intelligent algorithms. Today's improvements in artificial intelligence algorithms have led to significant progress in fields like finance and education, thanks to the production of large datasets. However, data ownership and usage often lie with different companies, leading to a lack of full trust between them. Consequently, many datasets cannot be analyzed in real-time. Dr. Zhang recommended a novel algorithm called homomorphic encryption, which allows learning from encrypted data without needing access to the data itself. This approach enables data owners and processors to operate independently while fostering trust-based collaboration. When asked about the moment when machine intelligence might surpass human intelligence, Dr. Zhang noted that the Turing Test might lead to misunderstanding. Machines do not need to perfectly mimic human cognition, as achieving full imitation is a lengthy process. While machines can easily adopt the rational aspects of human behavior, replicating human emotions remains challenging. Dr. Zhang also established Danhua Capital, a venture capital fund focused on high-level technology investments. His goal is to better combine science with industry, emphasizing that the highest aspirations of science are simplicity and universality. By applying first principles to problem-solving and investing, he aims to utilize Stanford's excellent education and research to advance the artificial intelligence industry. Dr. Zhang expressed his willingness to serve as a bridge between academia and corporations, as well as between Silicon Valley and China. In conclusion, Dr. Zhang stressed that artificial intelligence presents a tremendous opportunity for China. With its large population, extensive data, and highly educated populace, particularly in mathematical sciences, China is well-positioned to excel. Through the development of artificial intelligence, Dr. Zhang hopes to significantly enhance China's fundamental sciences. Achieving this vision requires building two bridges: one connecting academia and business, and the other linking Silicon Valley and China. He is eager to play a bridging role in this endeavor.
