Analysis of ATA Standard Transmission Protocol Based on Ethernet

The Ethernet-based ATA Transmission Protocol (AoE) was originally an open source community plan designed by several technicians from Bell Labs. The largest company behind AoE is Coraid, which is also a large company in the AoE storage array market. In addition to Coraid, there are other small companies that also support this agreement, and they all have some experts in open source storage involved.

Proponents of this protocol claim that the ATA transmission protocol, with its basic design superiority, can achieve higher transmission reliability and performance at a lower cost. The basic principle of Ethernet-based ATA transmission is simple, just like the transmission performance in a local area network. In addition, some traditional assumptions about data storage in the past will also be replaced by new protocols.

Of course, aggregating storage onto the network is nothing new: IT architects have been using NAS devices for the past 20 years. This is achieved through NFS or SMB and CIFS protocols. Today, the iSCSI protocol is also used as an alternative to FC FC for storage area networks (SAN). Ethernet-based Fibre Channel (FCoE) is also a powerful manifestation of converging storage onto the network, but this is not our only choice. AoE has actually existed longer than FCoE.

1. Ten small knowledge about AoE

Ethernet-based ATA transmission is not necessarily very familiar to many enterprise-level data storage architects, but anyone who has used AoE will like it very much. Below we will share ten small knowledge about AoE together:

1) The Ethernet-based ATA transmission protocol has been around for more than ten years and is an open standard protocol.

2) Coraid is the main supporter of this agreement, but other companies will still sell some compatible hardware products.

3) Without encapsulation, the AoE client will split the I / O request into a size equal to the maximum transmission unit.

4) The Ethernet-based ATA transmission mode is a connectionless transmission mode and does not use a serial number. It uses the label of each request to ensure the normal I / O transmission.

5) The target or LUN is usually identified by numbers to identify the storage array, and the network can be compatible with more clients and targets.

6) The packet retransmission is also completed by this protocol, and the problem of "order disorder" of the request is eliminated by marking.

7) AoE protocol can support multiple host initiation, network connection and target end without special protocol or configuration.

8) The AoE protocol itself does not have security restrictions: Although the access control list based on the network card address has been configured, because they do not have session control, anyone can write data to any storage system.

9) The ATA transmission protocol based on Ethernet is also not routable, so it is limited to the local network.

10) From a practical perspective, almost any hardware can be used for AoE, from the basic LOM port to the customer's switch to the enterprise's equipment.

For Ethernet-based optical fiber communication, there may be a large variety of differences, but for the Ethernet-based ATA transmission protocol, they use almost the same new data center protocol: this protocol can realize the current Some ATA storage protocols are converted into Ethernet-based protocols without choosing high-level protocols, such as the iSCSI protocol based on TCP / IP protocol that we are familiar with.
