[China - May 11, 2017] e-Community , the world's leading distributor of electronic components and development services, has announced that it has developed an Internet of Things (IoT) power calculator that will not only help IoT project developers understand IoT device battery life expectancy can also help them try different component and software algorithms to determine their impact on battery life.
IoT applications with sensor systems are increasingly demanding battery power, where the sensor system is responsible for collecting data and passing it to the cloud. Unlike many large connection systems, these relatively small devices are often unable to connect to the mains, which means they must be powered autonomously by battery or energy harvesting.
Although more and more applications are now capable of energy harvesting at ultra-low power, there are more applications that do not apply this method, in which case the battery is required to power the system. Unlike products that use energy harvesting, the battery needs to be replaced over time, and the cost of replacing the battery is often higher than the cost of the IoT device itself. Therefore, estimating battery life is critical.
This calculator is easy to use and provides quick access to test results. The user enters basic hardware-related parameters, including different types of microcontrollers and batteries, as well as software information (such as software wake-up frequency, data acquisition/processing cycle, and communication operational requirements) that the calculator can use to calculate energy consumption.
The result is a fast and easy way to calculate the battery life of IoT applications, and previous calculations required spreadsheet programs or manual calculations of battery life, which was difficult and time consuming.
Steve Carr, Director of Global Marketing at element14, said: “We have the experience to work with design engineers to meet their design needs in an increasingly powerful “connected†world, and this demand is changing rapidly. The calculator has evolved into a tool to help solve one of the key challenges that are urgently needed to solve for IoT applications, and is one of the many resources available to the ICOM IoT Center."
The calculator is available from the e-Community IoT Center, a “one-stop portal†that covers news, opinions, articles and tools related to the Internet of Things, as well as analyzing the calculator and affecting IoT applications. An article on battery life factors.
