Beats Benz launches world's first all-electric heavy truck

Mercedes-Benz newly released Urban eTruck

Inspired by Tesla, in recent years, major automobile manufacturers in Europe have stepped up efforts to invest in the manufacturing and R&D of electric vehicles. Audi just released three new electric cars on Monday. Porsche is expected by media to recruit more than 1,400 new employees into the development of its own electric sports car and is expected to be released in 2019. BMW also said recently that it will release a flagship electric car, i NEXT, in 2021, and that the car will be equipped with autopilot. As a world-renowned car brand, Mercedes-Benz naturally will not lag behind.

Audi released new electric car

A few days ago, Mercedes-Benz officially released a prototype of the all-electric semi-trailer, the Urban eTruck, in Stuttgart, Germany. This car has a weight of up to 26 tons and has become the world's first clean energy heavy-duty truck. Just last week, Tesla has just announced that it will be committed to the development of commercial electric vehicles in the future, and said that the company is currently developing electric buses and electric semi-trailers (named Tesla Semi), and plans to release in 2017. Obviously, in the commercial electric vehicle market, Mercedes-Benz walked in front of Tesla.

Tesla announces the release of electric semi-trailer next year

Like all EVs, the Urban eTruck is very quiet and quiet, without the usual rumbling roar of regular truck diesel engines, and it runs smoothly. The 26-ton load is also fully capable of transporting large cargoes in urban life. But like all electric cars, mileage and battery life are the biggest shortcomings of the Urban eTruck. At present, the car can only travel about 200 kilometers after being fully charged. This is also the origin of Urban in the name, that is, its location can only be a large-scale transportation within the city and cannot be run between cities.

Due to limitations in mileage and costs, Mercedes-Benz said it will not mass-produce the Urban eTruck within the next few years, but will exist as a concept vehicle. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz predicts that in 2026, the automotive battery industry will be able to reduce manufacturing costs by 2.5 times while maintaining the same performance. Therefore, the company plans to formally launch the Urban eTruck.
